Assignment 3 - CD Package

Bon Iver - "For Emma, Forever Ago"

This project is still in the works, but here are two different concepts for my cd package design. I'm much more tied to the first design, which uses photos that I took on the streets of San Francisco several years ago. I was in love with the way this red exterior wall was picking up bursts of light so beautifully. When beginning this project, I chose an album that Ive been listening to a lot over the past year (and feel Ive soaked up thoroughly). When thinking about the feeling that this album exudes, I immediately thought of these photos, and their warm, magical, ethereal (yet rich/heavy) quality. I also felt that the idea of bouncing light and shadow perfectly expressed a quality in the artist's vocals and melodies.

Version 1:

Version 2:

This design uses a watercolor painting that I made recently. While I dont think this version is as strong as the first, I do think the fragility/muted quality of the painting lends something new to the design. Again there is that sort of ebb and flow of pale and intense colors mirroring his vocals. The colors are also sort of romantic, yet cold and a bit melancholy, like the music.

Clock Prototype

Here are some photos of the clock prototype. After a trip to the hardware store and lots of futzing, cutting, and gluing, I finally put together a working clock. As you can see, the circle attached to the end of the second hand fits into each icon as it moves around. I think this is very close to how the final clock will look, though Im still experimenting with how i want to execute several design elements...

Assignment 2 - Draft 2

"Biological Clock" Project - Draft 2
Here I've tried adding color to the icons. Strangely enough, general hue patterns seemed to form throughout the different sections quite naturally. This is all still very much in progress, though. More to come.

This is how the circular ends of the clock hands would look when overlapping with each of the icons.

Adding type to the hands. Trying out different variations...

Assignment 2 - Response to Article

"Biological Clock" Project - Draft 1
This is an idea that's been marinating in my head for a while, but after reading the articles for class (and, frankly, with valentine's day rolling around), it seemed like the perfect time to start transforming my loose ideas and observations into a coherent design. I am a 27 year old female, and over the past few years, Ive noticed that all of my female friends (and females around me in general) seem to feel a sense of anxiety about "where they are" in the scheme of their life plans – particularly those involving dating, love, marriage, family, etc. There seems to be an intense sense of urgency about "when" (or, more specifically, by what age) you need to have accomplished certain goals, including meeting the right person, feeling professionally successful, becoming engaged, or having a baby. (The desired life goals, of course, are different for each person.) I think that this anxiety is pervasive and spreads like wildfire between friends, and creates an unnecessary sense of dissatisfaction for those who are not on the same life schedule as others. For a while I've been wondering where all of these rules, age limits, and time constraints come from. Is it society putting this pressure on females? Do our bodies and physiological makeups contribute? I am someone who believes that "the right time" can be very different for each, unique person, and that everyone's life clocks run at a different pace (and, of course, not all clocks have the same desired milestones either). Thus, I wanted to create a piece that would bring these ideas to the forefront and allow females to not only think about why we might feel this anxiety, but also have a chance to laugh about it and possibly have a sigh of relief because maybe it's all more flexible – and less scary – than we all think? Here is the beginning of this project coming together...
